Apartment Building Pest Control #2

Cockroaches Love it.........
It's such a nice CLEAN building !

PROBLEM: The Compactor Room is clean and odor-free, but there is always a few Cockroaches present.

COMMENT: WASHING THE COMPACTOR ROOM AND GARBAGE CHUTES REGULARLY NOT ONLY WASHES AWAY DIRT AND ODOR-CAUSING BACTERIA, IT WASHES AWAY ALSO YOUR PROTECTION - THE INSECTICIDE.

SUGGESTION: Wash the Compactor Room the day before the Pest Control service and leave it as long as possible before washing again. When it is washed down again it should be treated again with a residual insecticide. If you have a garbage room deodorizing system check that the deodorizing chemicals are not neutralizing the insecticide.

PROBLEM: The building had Mice, they are gone but the Cockroaches are worse than ever.

COMMENT: STICKING LOOSE MOUSE BAIT - EVEN STUFF LEFT IN AN OLD BAG BY THE PEST CONTROL - INTO CRACKS AROUND PIPE OPENINGS, ALONG DUCTS, IN CEILINGS, ETC., MAY HELP SOLVE THE MOUSE PROBLEM, BUT IT CAN INCREASE THE INSECT PROBLEMS - MOST RODENTICIDES ARE NOT POISONOUS TO INSECTS, IN FACT INSECTS THRIVE ON THEM.

SUGGESTION: Rodenticides should be used in approved containers only. Never leave old loose baits in an uninspected location. Bait stations should be inspected regularly.

PROBLEM: The suite has been sprayed 6 times in as many months, and the Cockroaches keep appearing.

COMMENT: WHAT SORT OF ROACHES ARE THEY? THE GERMAN ROACH IS ATTRACTED TO MOISTURE AND FOODSTUFFS AND IS GENERALLY FOUND IN KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS; BUT THE BROWN-BANDED ROACH IS ATTRACTED TO WARMTH AND CAN BE FOUND IN ANY PART OF THE BUILDING THAT IS 75°F OR MORE.

SUGGESTION: There is no point in treating for one pest if you have another with a different lifestyle. First, identify the problem - then treat accordingly.

PROBLEM: The pest has been identified, the correct insecticide is being used, a dozen or more suites are being sprayed every month. The Cockroaches are as bad as ever.

COMMENT: MOST INSECTICIDE SPRAYS LAST ABOUT 4 OR 5 WEEKS. WHEN THE SPRAY IS DEAD THE ROACHES CAN ROAM FREELY.

SUGGESTION: Inspect the suites above, below and on either side. Cockroaches travel up and down the water shafts, around the outside of waste pipes, along service conduits. Effective control could call for a block treatment.

PROBLEM: The building is being sprayed constantly, month after month suites are being treated. The Cockroach situation does not seem to improve.

COMMENT: AFTER A CERTAIN STAGE, CONTINUAL SPRAYING TENDS TO BE SELF-DEFEATING; THE TREATMENT JUST DRIVES THE ROACHES INTO THE WALLS AND AROUND THE BUILDING.

SUGGESTION: Have the suites dusted as well as sprayed. Insecticide dust usually lasts much longer than sprays; it is placed in the enclosed spaces and voids, i.e. false bottoms of kitchen and bathroom cupboards, around waste and water pipes and other utilities. This hinders the spread of Cockroaches from suite to suite.

*****

PROBLEM: The building is sprayed, suites are treated but Cockroaches keep turning up in odd places and in the suites from time to time.

COMMENT: SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE, IN THE BUILDING HAS ROACHES AND EITHER DOES NOT KNOW OR DOES NOT CARE.

SUGGESTION: Carry out a little detective work, pinpoint the possible suite(s) - a person who is in part of the building that has had problems over the months, but has never complained or said a word about Cockroaches - perhaps he/she is your problem.

*****

PROBLEM: In spite of everything Cockroach problems persist.

COMMENT: CONTINUAL USE OF THE SAME PESTICIDE CAN RESULT IN RESISTANCE.

SUGGESTION: Continual use of the same insecticide can result in resistance. Vary the insecticide from time to time. Consider the use of inorganic toxicants, to which there is no known resistance.
