(Climex lectularius) - are the most obnoxious bloodsucking insects that infest homes. Their presence is not necessarily due to neglect, carelessness or poor housekeeping.; these insects may be brought into a home in spite of all reasonable precautions. When introduced into a home, they soon become very numerous and irritating and may affect the welfare of the occupants.
In most parts of Canada there is only one species - Climex lectularius - and it may be troublesome in homes, theaters, barns, poultry houses, and in buildings housing Rabbits or other warm blooded animals and Nuisance Birds such as Pigeons.
Occasionally Bed Bugs of a different species, associated with Bats or Swallows, may be found.
Habits
Bed Bugs feed mostly at night by biting people who are asleep, consuming up to five times their weight in blood. If they are very hungry and the light is dim, they will feed during the day.
When Bed Bugs bite, they inject a fluid into the skin that assists them in obtaining blood. Often the fluid causes the skin to become irritated and inflamed, welts develop and there is much itching.
If the feeding is undisturbed a full grown Bed Bug becomes engorged with blood in 3 to 5 minutes. It then crawls to its hiding lace where it remains for several days digesting its meal. When hunger returns, the Bed Bug emerges and seeks another meal of blood.
Life
Under normal conditions, Bed Bugs may live up to 12 months, after mating and having a meal of blood, the female lays from 3 to 5 eggs daily, until 200 or more have been laid, although up to 400 eggs could be laid. The whitish eggs are stuck to surfaces near the female. During warm periods the eggs hatch in 6 to 10 days and become adults in 6 to 7 weeks; under adverse conditions, they may take 4 to 5 months to mature. There are usually 3 to 4 generations a year.
Bed Bugs are usually introduced into homes, hotels, motels, rooming houses, etc., in infested material such as luggage, mattresses, furniture and clothing. Bed Bugs move easily from room to room in houses, and from home to home in apartments and duplexes, generally following electrical and plumbing services and through cracks in walls.
Sanitation
Constant care should be exercised to intercept and prevent them from becoming established. Blocking-up cracks, crevices, and openings around water pipes, electrical conduits, etc, will minimize the possibility of Bed Bugs entering from adjacent attached premises.
Before applying sprays, remove all bedding, mattress covers and pillow covers; and launder them in hot soapy water and dry in a dryer or in sunlight. It is advisable to run the pillows in the dryer for a short time. Do not use the mattress until the cover has been replaced.
