Flour Beetles
(Tribolium)

The Tribolium species feed on cereal and similar  products of all kinds - grains, flour, beans, dried fruits, nuts, chocolate, peppers, peas, oilseeds, rice, semolina and spices.

The Confused Flour Beetle (Tribolium confusum) is unable to penetrate whole grains, and is unable to fly.

The Red Flour Beetle (Tribolium castaneum) can attack whole grains. It is able to fly.

Both species are found worldwide. They are small flat, reddish brown beetles about one eighth of an inch long; the Confused Flour Beetle is generally slightly larger with smaller eyes..

The larvae of both species are small worm-like and slightly under ¼inch long; the Confused Flour Beetle larvae are marked with yellow bands, whilst the Red Flour Beetle larvae have pale brown bands.

Pheromones incorporated into suitable traps should be installed to give early warning and identification of possible infestations. The same Lure attracts both species.
