Squirrels
Squirrels are found throughout North America, and many species have adapted well to city life. They are true rodents and closely related to RATS and MICE, in some parts of the world they are called TREE RATS. They are very adaptable and very persistent in their behavior patterns.

Squirrels will chew insulation on electric wires, make noise and create breaks in the weather seal of a house. Being rodents, they have to gnaw and can damage the materials around the structure.

Squirrels are active in the morning and/or afternoon. They do not hibernate but remain in their nests for several days during severe cold or wet weather. A litter of 2 to 7 young is born in the spring and sometimes a second litter in late August. The young remain in the nest for at least 6 weeks before going out on their own.
Squirrels eat bulbs, mushrooms, fruits, nuts, tree buds and twigs. However, like their relative the RAT, they will eat almost anything of food value. Squirrels have been identified as disease carriers, they carry also parasites that attack man - Ticks, Fleas, Mites, and tend to hoard food supplies, which can lead to insect problems. For more information visit Squirrels and Diseases

Squirrels may jump onto a roof from nearby trees, or climb drainpipes, shingle or even brick walls; they may run along utility wires. Bird feeders are attractive to Squirrels and may encourage them to take up local residence.

PROTECTION
Vulnerable areas should be protected with ½ inch wire mesh or 26 gauge sheet metal. Squirrels can gnaw through wood, plastic and similar materials - as do RATS. Garbage should be kept in tightly sealed metal cans.

Trapping is the legal method of control. Holes in the roof should not be sealed until all Squirrels have been removed, the Squirrel Controller is effective for this purpose. A mother will tear off roof shingles to reach her young imprisoned inside. Squirrels can be easily caught using Trap#54124. A Trap Cover can be used in transporting the animal.
A Catch Pole snare may be used effectively in conjunction with the trapping pogram.

Do NOT poison Squirrels, or any other wild animal, it is not only illegal it is stupid -

ALL THAT ROTTING MEAT IN OR AROUND YOUR PREMISES IS NOT SOMETHING TO SNIFF AT !!!

For treatment of Squirrel odor use "EarthCare" Odor Remover

WARNING
Squirrels carry the WEST NILE VIRUS; if you find a dead animal do not pick it up with bare hands, fluids leaking from the body contain the virus and, if not handled and disposed of properly, the fluids can be inadvertently ingested by humans.

For safe handling of dead Squirrels use a "PickerUpper

CONTROL
There has been NO legal SQUIRREL REPELLENT available in Canada since Repellents became subject to Federal regulation.  Repellents based on POLYBUTENE, similar to BIRD REPELLENT, are available in other jurisdictions.
