Silverfish

Silverfish are mainly a nuisance and are often found in homes, warehouses, public buildings, and industrial premises generally. They feed on a wide range of materials and may multiply rapidly if not controlled. They are usually very active at night and in dimly lighted areas.

The term “Silverfish” is used to designate 2 species of insect: Silverfish and Firebrats.

Silverfish are slender, carrot-shaped, wingless insects about ½ ins in length and have 2 long, slender antennae or feelers at the head and 3 long bristle-like appendages at the tip of the abdomen. The body of an adult Silverfish is covered with scales which may give either a uniformly silver appearance, as is the case with Silverfish, or a grey-brownish mottled appearance, as is the case with Firebrats.

Silverfish are very active at night or in areas where light is poor; when disturbed they run rapidly to a hiding place, they prefer damp places and are found in basements and on ground floor levels. They frequently become trapped in washbowls, sinks, and tubs. They may appear in any part of a building.

Firebrats prefer warm places and are usually found in furnace rooms, bakeries, and around heating pipes.

Silverfish feed on flour, starch, paste, paper, seeds, and textiles such as linen, cotton, rayon, cellophane.

All species of Silverfish develop in the same manner. The female may lay from 10 to 100 eggs, either in undisturbed corners and crevices, or openly where she has been feeding. The young resemble the parents and grow slowly reaching adulthood in 1 to 3 years. Many live as long as 3 years and females are able to lay eggs when only 3 months old. Silverfish have been known to survive for more than 6 months without food.

Damage to stored cotton and wool garments attributed to “moths” is often caused by Silverfish.
